Fostering FAQs

What are the expectations of foster caregivers?

In addition to providing daily care and shelter, we ask our foster caregivers to provide regular updates on the dog's status and personality, provide photos and videos for adoption materials, and bring the dog to a 1-hour monthly Adoption Event (or arrange for alternative transport). But most importantly, we ask that you provide your foster dog with love and attention.

Can I pick the age/sex/breed of my foster dog?

We will always take your preferences into account, and you will never be expected or obligated to foster any particular dog. That said, the more flexible you are, the easier it will be to place a dog with you.

Do I have enough time to foster for NOBR?

NOBR works hard to match the right dog with the right foster caregiver! If you're worried that you don't have enough time to foster a dog, don't worry! We can place a lower-maintenance dog with you, in which case, very little daily time may be needed. In fact, fostering a lower-maintenance dog can be a great alternative to dog ownership if you don't have the time required to own a dog.

Can I adopt my foster dog?

In nearly all cases, we will happily approve a foster caregiver's adoption of his/her foster dog! On rare occasion, a dog may have requirements in a forever home than were not expected of the foster home. For example, if we learn that a foster dog has rapidly progressing mobility issues, we may require that the forever home have few steps even though the dog has already been placed in a foster home with many steps.

How long will my foster dog stay with me?

The duration of foster placement varies by dog, but the average placement lasts for a few months. While we can't guarantee the length of stay for any individual dog, we will always work to accommodate your availability (travel, holidays, changing work hours, etc.). If necessary, we can always move the dog to a new foster home.

Will my pets be safe?

We work hard to evaluate each new dog that comes into our program, which includes testing them with others dogs prior to foster placement. We also facilitate structured introductions between your resident dog and the potential foster dog, using best practices to ensure smooth introductions and relationships. Our Behavioral Specialist is also available to help facilitate introductions, and we provide ample resources on managing introductions during our onboarding process.
