Our Story

New Orleans Bulldog Rescue (NOBR) is an all-breed dog rescue and advocacy organization, dedicated to furthering the human-canine bond and advocating for the welfare of dogs in the New Orleans area and beyond. The Rescue was founded in 2010 by Michael Schachtman in honor of Boss & Lucille.

NOBR is a volunteer-run 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. All donations are tax-deductible, greatly appreciated, and 100% go directly to animal care.

Our Mission

New Orleans Bulldog Rescue exists to save dogs, support their well-being, and strengthen the bond between people and their pets. We rescue, rehabilitate, and advocate for dogs throughout New Orleans and the Gulf South — giving each dog the individualized care, medical support, and compassion they deserve. Every dog matters, and every successful rescue begins with a community that cares.

What We Believe

We believe every dog deserves safety, dignity, and a chance to thrive. We believe rescue is a partnership — between fosters, adopters, veterinarians, volunteers, and supporters. We believe in responsible ownership, education, and lifelong advocacy. And we believe in celebrating the joy, resilience, and humor that dogs bring into our lives every single day.

The Canine Aid & Pleasure Club

NOBR is officially registered as the New Orleans Bulldog Rescue Canine Aid & Pleasure Club — a name inspired by New Orleans’ historic Social Aid & Pleasure Clubs that honor community, compassion, and celebration. Anyone who fosters, volunteers, donates, transports, or lends a hand becomes part of this tradition. It’s our way of recognizing the people who make rescue possible — the ones who show up, open their homes, and carry the spirit of New Orleans into everything they do. The club also supports community events, special projects, and our beloved annual calendar — bringing people and pups together for a cause that matters.

Our Safe Haven Program

When home stops being safe, leaving shouldn’t mean losing the animals you love. Many domestic violence survivors delay escaping dangerous situations because they fear what may happen to their pets. Research shows a strong relationship between domestic violence and animal abuse, justifying this fear.

Our Safe Haven Program exists to remove that barrier by providing temporary care for the pets of individuals experiencing domestic violence, ensuring that pets have a protected place to stay while their owners secure safety.

Through partnerships with local shelters, advocacy groups, and our network of trained foster homes, we can often accept dogs on short notice. All breeds are welcome. While in our care, pets receive food, supplies, and any necessary medical attention until families are ready to be reunited. We believe protecting animals helps protect people—and sometimes, a beloved pet is a powerful source of comfort and healing during recovery.

If you’d like to support this life-saving program by fostering or volunteering, please email NewOrleansBulldogs@gmail.com. To help cover food, supplies, and medical care, please consider making a donation—every dollar goes directly to the animals in our care.
