Frequently Asked Adoption Questions
The first step in adopting a dog with NOBR is submitting our online adoption application.
If you apply to adopt a specific dog who is still available for adoption, our Adoptions Team will review your application and, if it seems like a good match, will contact you to setup an introduction. For more detail, please see our Adoption Process section, above.
If you applied without a specific dog named (or for a dog who is no longer available), you should keep an eye on our social media and Adopt Me webpage. If you see a dog you're interested in, just email us directly at NewOrleansBulldogs@gmail.com (mailto:NewOrleansBulldog@gmail.com)to let us know! Applying in advance will expedite the adoption process. Applications stay active for 12-months.
NOBR is an all-breed dog rescue, though we prioritize the rescue and rehabilitation of bulldog and bully breeds. Our most commonly available breeds are English Bulldogs, French Bulldogs, mini American Bullys, pitbull breeds, American Bulldogs, Old English Bulldogs, and bulldog-pitbull mixes. Less often, we get Boston Terriers, Cane Corsos, and their mixes.
We strive to have a wide range of dogs available for adoption, from puppies to seniors, from frenchies to pitbulls, from running partners to couch potatoes, and from those in perfect health to those with special needs. We're proud to rescue dogs who are traditionally overlooked in shelter settings in addition to easier-to-place dogs. Availability changes often, so keep an eye on our Adopt webpage or follow us on social media for updates.
Adoption fees are established based on an individual dog’s age, health, and breed. Younger, healthier, bulldog-breed dogs will have higher adoption fees.
The adoption fee covers (1) essential veterinary care, (2) spay/neuter surgery, (3) up-to-date vaccinations and heartworm prevention, (4) microchipping and microchip services, and (5) any veterinary procedures required at the time of adoption, such as surgeries or heartworm treatment.
Typical Adoption Fees by Breed
• $150: most pitbull-type breeds
• $300: American Bulldogs, Dobermans, Rottweilers, Boston Terriers, and some bulldog mixes
• $500-$800: Olde English Bulldogs, English Bulldogs
• $1000-$1500: young English Bulldogs, French Bulldogs, "exotic" Bulldogs
NOBR is a completely volunteer-run nonprofit, driven fully by our love for dogs. 100% of adoption fees are used to offset a small fraction of our veterinary bills, which regularly include $1,000 heartworm treatments, $1,200-$4,000 surgeries, among other expenses.
Our English and French Bulldog adoption fees are standard for bulldog-specific rescues across the U.S., which are higher than the average rescue fee due to the substantial veterinary costs of rescuing and rehabilitating these breeds.
That said, we believe that the adoption fee should never stand in the way of anyone adopting a new best friend. Therefore, we always have wonderful mixed-breed dogs and pitbull-breed dogs with adoption fees often lower than the average rescue's adoption fee, but who have an equal amount of love to give as any English or French Bulldog.
As a small 100% volunteer-run nonprofit, adopting with us is not as fast as adopting with your local shelter. However, we will take the time to ensure a successful match and smooth transition. The duration varies, and may take from as little as one week and up-to one month.
We don't use a first-come-first-serve adoption policy. Instead, we take the time to get to know each dog, evaluate their needs and personalities, and use that information to assess if a dog seems like a good potential match for an interested applicant. This is based on the presence or absence of other dogs, other species of pet, children, a dog's energy level and activity needs, any special behavioral or medical needs, etc.
If a dog has multiple potential matches, we will do our best to match the dog with whoever seems like the best match. If we've been working with a qualified applicant to find the right match for awhile, we will often contact them first. Don't be discouraged if we don't have the right dog right away!
Our adoption radius is within 2-hour of the New Orleans area. This includes parts of southern Mississippi and southwest Alabama. Occasionally, we will extend our adoption radius for dogs who haven't found their perfect home closer to New Orleans, but this is rare and usually only applies to our long-stay and special-needs dogs.
We require that adopters travel to New Orleans to meet the dog they’re interested in prior to adoption.
First-time dog owners are welcome to apply to adopt through NOBR! That said, we may require that certain dogs with complex behavioral or medical needs be adopted by applicants with greater experience.
